 Crystal is a type of mass-produced, cut and polished glass produced by the privately-owned Swarovski company of Wattens, Austria. The term "Swarovski" is a brand name, named after the founder of the company, Daniel Swarovski. Daniel Swarovski was born in 1862, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) at a time when the industrial age was coming into its own.

He experimented with electricity and glass-cutting and soon developed and patented a machine for mass-producing mechanically cut and polished glass. This gave him a major advantage over the previous handicraft industry. To be able to power his grinding machine with hydro - electric power, Daniel Swarovski moved to Wattens in Tyrol with his family, and with this he laid the foundation for the realisation of his crystalline vision. He invented an automatic cutting machine in 1892.

In 1895 the Swarovski company was founded when he established a crystal cutting factory in Wattens. Here he could take advantage of local hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding processes he had patented. The founders were Swarovski himself, financier Armand Kosman and Franz Weis, the latter remaining a sleeping partner. The company was originally known as A.Kosmann, Daniel Swarovski & Co, which was later shortened to K.S.& Co.

Swarovski crystal contains approximately 32% lead to maximize refraction. The Swarovski Crystal range includes crystal sculptures and miniatures, jewelry and couture, home decor and chandeliers. All sculptures are marked with a logo. The original Swarovski logo was an edelweiss flower, but was replaced with the current swan logo in 1988. In order to create a crystal that allows light to refract in a rainbow spectrum, Swarovski coats some of its crystals with special metallic chemical coatings. Aurora Borealis, or "AB", is one of the most popular coatings, and gives the surface a rainbow oil slick appearance. Swarovski testimony In 2004, Swarovski created the 9 foot diameter, 550 pound star that tops the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in NY City for the first of five consecutive years. Swarovski was also a sponsor for The Phantom of the Opera (2004 film), in which the "standing model" of the chandelier was composed of Swarovski crystals. (Rf:wikipedia)
